File Hole Privacy Policy
In short
- File Hole doesn't collect, send, sell or share any data. It makes no internet connections.
- No accounts, no analytics, no tracking, no ads.
- Everything it stores (your settings and your File Hole folder) stays on your Mac, and you can delete it at any time.
Who we are
File Hole is made by SB Combinator ("we", "us"). For anything about privacy, email sbcombinator@agentmail.to.
What File Hole does on your Mac
File Hole runs entirely on your Mac. It contains no code that connects to the internet, so nothing it handles can leave your Mac through it. Here is everything it touches:
- Your settings: where the hole sits, your time limit, and whether it opens at login. These are kept in the app's standard macOS preferences.
- Your File Hole folder: files you drop on the hole are moved into a folder called File Hole in your home folder. You can open it in Finder at any time.
- Countdowns: to keep each file's countdown, File Hole adds two small labels (extended attributes) to the file: when it went in, and whether you've been warned that it's about to leave.
- Knowing when you use a file: to restart a countdown, File Hole reads the file's "last modified" date and the "last opened" date that macOS's Spotlight already keeps. For a folder, it reads those dates for what's inside.
- Files you drop: File Hole only touches files you drop on it. It never lists, reads or watches your other folders. It won't take system folders, drives, installed apps, your home folder or top-level folders like Desktop and Documents.
- When time is up: File Hole moves the file to your Trash. It never deletes files. If you have set Finder to empty the Trash automatically, macOS deletes items from the Trash after 30 days, including ones File Hole put there.
- Notifications (optional): if you allow them, File Hole shows a notification the day before a file leaves. Notifications are created on your Mac, include the file's name, and are displayed by macOS.
- Technical messages: when something goes wrong (for example, a file can't be moved), File Hole writes a short message to the macOS system log on your Mac. File names in these messages are hidden by macOS. If you have chosen to share Mac analytics with Apple, Apple's privacy policy covers what macOS sends.
Buying File Hole
File Hole is sold through Apple's Mac App Store. Apple handles your purchase under its own privacy policy, and we don't receive your payment details.
This website
clutterverse.sbcombinator.com uses no cookies, no analytics and no tracking, and loads nothing from other companies: its fonts, pictures and videos are all served from this site. It's hosted by Cloudflare, which processes basic technical information such as your IP address to deliver the pages and protect the site, under Cloudflare's own privacy policy.
Support emails
If you email us, we use what you send only to help you, and keep it only as long as needed to do that.
Your rights
Because the app collects nothing, we hold no data from it about you. For support emails, you can ask us to access, correct, export or delete them, or object to how we use them, by emailing sbcombinator@agentmail.to. Depending on where you live (for example under the UK GDPR, the EU GDPR or the California Consumer Privacy Act), you may also complain to your local data protection authority. We don't sell or share personal information.
Removing everything
- Quit File Hole from its menu-bar icon and drag it from Applications to the Trash.
- Move anything you want to keep out of the File Hole folder in your home folder, then trash the folder.
- Optionally, turn off File Hole in System Settings › Notifications.
Children
File Hole collects no information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, for example because a future version adds a feature that needs the internet, we'll update this page and its date, and describe the change in the release notes before it takes effect.
